I am trying to understand what the word "Diess" means in this sentence (I'm puzzled it's spellt with capital D, indicating substantive?):
"Es geschah Diess im vietren Jahrhundert Roms."

"Dies" means "This".
It is an old German text, you read. That's the reason why it was spelled with a capital D. You can compare it with the kind of Shakespeares language.
So the correct translation would be: this.

This happened in the fourth century of Rome(s existance).

Thanks a lot for Diess
I couldn't find it on the internet or in an old voluminous (in fact 2 vols!) dictionary from early 1900 I have as reference. It was not only the capital D that bothered me but also the ending "ss". Nor could a native german intellectual help out.
